What does it mean to be Online?

In the past when someone mentioned they were “online” it meant people were surfing the web. Currently when someone ask whether or not I’m online the first thing that comes to my mind is that I’m logged in to social media. Being online to me means that I’m logged on to my Facebook, Instagram or even live on a gaming console. I believe being online involves in some sort of social activities like posting content, monitoring post or even chatting with friends. In reading Jeffrey Rosen’s I found it interesting when he mentioned “75% of U.S. recruiters and human resource professionals report that their companies require them to do online research about candidates, and many use a range of sites when scrutinizing applicants including search engines, social networking sites and blogs”(Rosen) He goes on to state that 70$ of U.S. recruiters report that they have rejected candidates because of information found online. I found it crazy because social media has soon become a necessity for future business endeavors. I believe people perceive one’s personality by viewing social media profiles. Social media sites such as Facebook has effected communities off-line not just online. For the future I believe applicants will be forced to have a Facebook in order to apply for certain job positions. Not only will it be needed for job applications but also other apps that require user information such as AirBnB. In order to rent an apartment or house through AirBnB ones Facebook profile is required.
