What does it mean to be Online?

In the past when someone mentioned they were “online” it meant people were surfing the web. Currently when someone ask whether or not I’m online the first thing that comes to my mind is that I’m logged in to social media. Being online to me means that I’m logged on to my Facebook, Instagram or even live on a gaming console. I believe being online involves in some sort of social activities like posting content, monitoring post or even chatting with friends. In reading Jeffrey Rosen’s I found it interesting when he mentioned “75% of U.S. recruiters and human resource professionals report that their companies require them to do online research about candidates, and many use a range of sites when scrutinizing applicants including search engines, social networking sites and blogs”(Rosen) He goes on to state that 70$ of U.S. recruiters report that they have rejected candidates because of information found online. I found it crazy because social media has soon become a necessity for future business endeavors. I believe people perceive one’s personality by viewing social media profiles. Social media sites such as Facebook has effected communities off-line not just online. For the future I believe applicants will be forced to have a Facebook in order to apply for certain job positions. Not only will it be needed for job applications but also other apps that require user information such as AirBnB. In order to rent an apartment or house through AirBnB ones Facebook profile is required.

The Internet and social media

In 2016, everyone online is social whether they want to be or not. This is because everyone shares information on some level. You may not be social with actual people, but you’re still communicating with someone or something. The level and willingness of this exposure varies heavily. Kids these days don’t know the damage that social media can cause. Because of their age, they can’t imagine a world without these things. They marvel at the capabilities of it, but don’t see the consequences of an increasingly invasive social media takeover. Am I being paranoid? Yeah, maybe a little bit. Takeover is a strong word, especially when the information on these sites is given willingly. There are over 500 million people on Facebook all engaging in Facebook related actitives constantly. No one seems to mind. The amounts of data collected daily, monthly, yearly, is off the charts. And they are not alone. Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, these names have become synonymous with food and water. We mention them even when not using them, and use them even when we shouldn’t be. Yet, Somehow, this is what the people want. even at considerable risk there are those who use social media and manage to keep their lives private. It’s a difficult task today, but one we must master. What’s taking place now is a blending of personas – the digital one that you created for yourself online, and the physical one, which is you in real life. Such a mixture can be dangerous because you are not allowed to be yourself. As we have seen with Stacy Synder, if the personas don’t match, even briefly, that could be the difference between that big promotion or getting fired. One the articles stresses that people need to relearn to forget, and recognize social media is an extension of us, not the definition of us. That’s what I’m afraid kids these days cannot do. There will be a time when they’ll come face to screen with something ancient and embarrassing and irrelevant, yet it will still be an issue.as for the rest of us, we need to choose our modes of communication wisely, and stay in touch with the tangible.

The Internet and Social Media

I think social media is a great tool. It just has to be used with caution. If there are aspects of your life you don’t want your employer knowing, then it is safe to say you shouldn’t post it. This is the message that the article “The Web Means the End of Forgetting” was trying to convey. Even after we die our profiles will still exist, so we should be mindful of how others perceive and remember us.

I never noticed that Facebook limits personal representation. Facebook provides only a few options of how we can identify ourselves. What about someone who does not identify themselves according to gender? It would be better if there was a more diverse group of software developers, so that there could be a broader view of identity instead of a narrow one.

The Internet and Social Media

The prevalence of the use of the internet in our world today is really incredible. The internet is becoming one of the fastest growing medium as far as free flow of information globally is concern. Third world countries like my own country Ghana, not too long ago lacked access to high speed internet. Today, the swift growth of the internet has been very impressive in the country (Ghana).

Internet service providers and telecommunication networks, have internet services for its customers at affordable rate or for free. Thus, the use of internet does not only help in the socio-economic growth but also, the free flow and sharing of information around the globe. Notwithstanding, there are also hitches here and there that seems to be affecting the growth of information technology (internet). As Fred Vogelstein says in his article “The Great Wall of Facebook”, internet has given each and everyone or businesses a fare opportunity to compete among each other. At the end, the smartest wins. For example, Facebook and Google are in a keen competition just to win consumers or majority of customers to take the lead. Issues like this affects young business to compete with already established businesses.

This week readings sum up to the fact that, the world is being globalized. What we use to do in the year 2015 has been improved in 2016. Whether the emergence of the internet is good or bad, it is the wheels moving the entire world as far as sharing of information is concern in our daily lives. But, one of the greatest issues users of the internet should put into consideration is that, whatever information or item being posted online, technically it cannot be erase. Therefore, it is really imperative especially for the youth to be mindful of whatever they post on social media like Facebook etc. Jeffrey Rosen in his article “The Web Means the End of Forgetting” throws more light on issues like this and I think personally, I see it as food for thought for all internet users.

Is Social Media the new way of life?

This generation is heavily impacted by the Internet worldwide but not everyone online is social. Some people commit crimes online, some are just bloggers and some just use social media to promote businesses or business products. I believe everyone is online because technology has advanced so much. To be online in 2016 is basically a description of who you are. If you not online, your pretty much considered a ghost.

According to “The Great Wall of Facebook’s Frank Vogelstein” over two million people have a Facebook account which is one-fifth of the of the world. Plus, you add in the other social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and social media’s new sensation; Snapchat. This estimate shows how much the world is heavily connected to the online world. Its like they have made it apart of themselves. Growing up, I did not have a social media account until I was 15. Parents were a whole lot more tougher with computers and cellphone. Now its not just the parent, its the child, the parent his or herself and the new generation of adults that have grown up with the comforts of social media. This article also states that there is pretty much an internet war; Google Vs Facebook. This heated mainstream war for World Wide Web supremacy is because each company wants to have the most users in in the world. In my opinion, if Facebook is really at war with Google, they would lose in the most ugliest manner because Google is worth quadruple the amount of Facebook and Google is the most mainstreamed search engine in the world.

The Second article, “ The Web Means the End of Forgetting” talks about social media posts and what are the dangers of what you post. i couldn’t get to finish reading this article but i did read the part where Stacy Synder was denied her teaching degree over her posting a drinking picture. This is just shocking and disappointing how this woman’s hard work and time devoted to obtaining this huge achievement was just snatched from her all because of a drinking picture that stated “Drunken Pirate”. Social media can be very harmful and very career-threating in Stacy’s case. I agree with the statement “Posts can come back to haunt you” because I have witnessed people get exploited by their sinister past wrongdoings and explicit images of themselves. Social media should not be anyone’s diary or journal. Anybody can be happy in life, the internet does not need to know why.

Internet and Social Media

Is everyone online social? What does it mean to be online in 2016?
Within today’s society there is constant debate over the emergence of technology and whether it provides benefits or disadvantages amongst individuals who rely on it. It’s important to note that due to the modernization of technology we as a species have been able to sustain life farther than expected. Unfortunately due to the presumptuous nature of society, the beneficial composition of technology has been used to antagonize rather than levitate individuals.
The article “Jeffrey Rosen, “the Web Means the End of Forgetting” ” gives us a glimpse of the drawbacks of social media and the impact it plays to not only our potential careers, but our reputations as well. Accordingly, there is a lack of privacy and vast openness to social media sites such as Facebook, where individuals from all walks of life can easily gain access to your profile and depict you in whatever manner depending on the content that is displayed in your personal profile. As stated in the article “today all of us are learning to expect the scrutiny that used to be reserved for the famous and the infamous”. Social media does give us the ability to freely express our ideas or values..but unfortunately…in this day of age we are restricted and being supervised by various sectors.
“In practice, however, self-governing communities like Wikipedia — or algorithmically self-correcting systems like Google — often leave people feeling misrepresented and burned.” To be online in 2016 means to be spectated.
Something that we as individuals are compelled to is the power to control. Certainly, there is no shortage of disagreement that blog spots and social networks allow us to control how we want to ideally portray ourselves. Because of such internet features, we are able to create our own desired personas, our own personal fables, and an alternate digital life that helps escape from reality. Such factors wall us off from maturely and mentally striving.
Everyone may be social online, but within verbal communication, that may not be the case. Nevertheless, Social media had played a role in unifying and enhancing community engagement. In regard to social and political movements such as black lives matter or the fight for women reproductive rights, social media has been the tool to keep everyone informed and active in such affairs.

(No title)

In 2016 Social media can translate into pretty much everything you do throughout your day if you want to be that vocal. Social media is the best interaction as well these days, especially when you meet and connect with people that share your same interests, goals, etc. (NO NOT JUST DATING)

In the Article “The Great Wall of Facbebook” Mark Zuckerberg is an ICON LOL! He is planning on making a world within a world. He stuck it to the man (pause) i.e. Google and is also going up against them to pretty much bump them out of the “social” picture, Simply put, Mark Zuckerberg is “Ready for War!!!” The whole search method sounds very cool as well, instead of algorithms we will get very real time data, thats awesome! Colonizing the web is a great idea too, when you don’t want to log onto fb you can still talk to that fb friend or friends whenever you want at the click of a button. I don’t know about you but real ads would be great. Instead of getting all these generic ads at places we don’t shop, we get to select ads of content.

After reading the article “The Web Means The End of Forgetting” if you haven’t started watching web content, now you must! Everything you post is for the web to see, it doesn’t matter if you delete it, it’s already out there in cyber space. So that $40 bottle of “Henny” with your bro’s and 1 joint has the opportunity of coming back to bite you in the future if it get’s into the right hands. Is it fare that companies are firing employees or Universities dismissing their students over a “little bit of fun?” The answer is no but the consequences are real. People are finding themselves arrested over pictures now, This only goes to show that these rules have just been written up, say there was no picture of the women with the drunken pirate; If someone from campus saw her while in that shirt and even with a few drinks, would she have been in trouble? So why because of a picture? The act is the act.

Internet and Social Media

Today’s society operates heavily through online interactions. Any service you can think of has some online presence, including things like social media, video games, or the internet itself. Since the introduction of the online universe, including the internet we as a generation have come a long way from what it originally was. The biggest trend we’re seeing now is the impact social media is having on individuals and how it affects their online behavior.
The presumption used to be that the only demographic that the internet appealed to was young adults or teens, but that has not been the case the past recent years. When you think of who is actively “online” and communicating with others nowadays you see users of all ages and backgrounds equally invested in their online personas. When you think of the activities that online individuals engage in they’re pretty much endless and including sharing of media, conversating, running a business, etc. While many do engage in some sort of online activity, other users don’t or use their online experience as a knowledgeable sponge in order to gather information and stay updated. Everyone is online in some way shape or form, it’s impossible to not be especially with all the technology/digital access that exists today, thanks to products in our schools, jobs, and homes. Individuals do have control of whom they keep in contact with, some choose to neglect that option and keep their online life private, so no not everyone is openly social but they are still part of the million online users. The online universe is only continuing to grow with each passing day, as does its number of users.
Cell Phones alongside other handheld devices are the direct cause for the online universe being as big as it is at the moment. Apps play a huge role in keeping users engaged in online services, whether they are aware of it or not. In essence, pretty much anyone with access to any of these devices can be considered an online user because of the online interactive necessities that must happen to operate such a device. When thought about from this perspective it is safe to say that yes, everyone who is online is social in some way, shape, or form.

Social media & Internet

Rayshawn Parrilla

We are living in a modern world where the Internet has a tremendous impact on our culture. Within the years, digital revolution has expanded and technology has taken over our computers, smart phones as well as the lives of many people. Social media is one of our biggest trends on the internet. I refer to it as the “New Herion” of 2015, considering its strong addiction. Powerful and influential, many people feel obligated to be part of the online social networks.
Facebook is a social network part of your average individual’s daily lives. “According to the article “Great Wall of Facebook,” more than 200 million people have a Facebook account. Along with other social networks including Twitter and Instagram, many are pressured into this virtual lifestyle. It’s metaphor symbolic to the idea of fear. People may think, they are missing out as they need to be part of every life experience. The effects of being online also promote “internet users to behave differently.” Individuals assume they must live up the high expectations of social media and anything less of them is not accepted.
In addition, the internet is a world where everything is recorded. All conversations, photos etc, you ever posted will be stored into digital files. The internet forgets nothing and makes it impossible for anyone to forget their past history. Being online also intends to violate people privacy. While most social networks require your profile to include your birthday, address and pictures, your personal information is revealed to the world. Although many people online are social, not everyone intensions are good. The invasion of others privacy online can attract stalkers as well as promote cyber bullying. In 2015, Online and social media may not be as social as people think.
It is evident, while most people spend a numerous amount of time online, it can lead to disturbing effects in your life. The internet distinguishes the difference between a person real world and virtual world. Although the objective of being online was to keep social people interacting with each other, as of 2015, social media and online portrays many meanings. While most people consider it a strong form of communication and entertainment, its content can also result to invasion of your privacy as well as people behaving differently.

Social Media

In the Web Means, the end of Forgetting touched on the Internet of the past. Of course, in 2016, you have to be way more careful what you post, but there are better privacy laws and setting to help protect your profile. But a person still has to be careful what they post. The beginning of this month Kim K posted a nude photo on Instagram and the Internet blow up; some people congratulated her courage; others told her that she should think about her kids before she does stupid stuff like that, and others slut-shamed her. With putting yourself out there like that, it brings in a world of opinions that people are not ready to hear or read.

In the Great Wall of Facebook: The Social Network’s Plan to Donate to Internet and keep Google Out tells use out right that battle with Facebook and Google. Both companies are at war with each other for the who has the most followers and users. I find that if both companies are competing for our attention let’s give them our attention as well as give them a list of the problem that they should troubleshoot. Google and Facebook have been at each other’s throats for a long time, even today they are still fighting. The evidence is Google +, really who uses google plus.

What I feel in the digital age social media is important to everyone because it keeps us all connected and up to date. Social media is so important there are even games about becoming an internet star. The Kendell and Kylie game are one of those games; you start as a person working in a salon to meeting the Jenner sisters and your life sky rocks to fame and the more followers you get, the more the world opens up to you.
