Internet and Social Media

I believe everyone online is social whether they realize it or not. To be social in 2016 can mean a lot of different things. It can mean that you’re posting your everyday move on Facebook at all times, it can also mean that you just log on to Facebook just to see what’s everyone up to and what’s new for that specific day or you just log on to see the new video and or pictures that people post. It’s very easy to be social in 2016.

In the article “The Great Wall of Facebook”, it speaks on the battle between Facebook and Google. They’re both battling to be at the very top, they both want to have the greatest amount of users on their websites. The war began when Google was first offered to be a stakeholder but then the deal came off the table and was given to Microsoft, who is Google’s biggest nemesis. The deal was reportedly worth a “$240 Million investment for a 1.6 percent stake in that company… which valued Facebook’s worth at $15 Billion.” According to Fred Vogelstein “More than 200 million people—about one-fifth of all Internet users—have Facebook accounts. They spend an average of 20 minutes on the site every day.” These types of numbers are ridiculous and shocking. I mean, one fifth of internet users are on Facebook that’s incredible and proves that Facebook is doing something right to keep their users on their website. Now if you are working for Facebook you are even more excited, grateful and amazed to be representing a company with these types of statistics.

In the article “ The Web Means the End of Forgetting” it talks about how what you post and what is posted about that links to you can come back and later haunt you. I feel as if the people that were used as examples in this article got their rights violated. For Stacy Snyder who was denied her teaching degree, was mistreated. How can she get in trouble for posting a picture on her own personal profile of her drinking and a shirt that says “Drunken pirate”. In no shape or form is she promoting for the students to go out and drink. It wasn’t like she was on the job when she posted this picture. However, this goes to show that you have to be very careful of what you post on the internet, because it may cause harm on you like it did for Stacy.

Is everyone online social? What does it mean to be online in 2016?

What is social media and social networking, why do people give it so much attention and importance? Who are the people using it? Facebook, Twitter and all forms of social media communication technology just a few years ago were a new kind of communication technology. These websites and applications are now recognized as household names in the United States, throughout the continent of Europe and many countries in the world utilize the effectiveness of social media. Social media has become one of the main sources of interaction in modern society and it keeps people connected. Social media has broken barriers of social class, economic class, and education, creating a world of activism and awareness.

As human beings we are social creatures. We have a natural need to connect with others and communicate with other people. We enjoy sharing our ideas, work, and art. Since the time we are children all throughout adolescent into adulthood humans have a need to communicate. In the past, due to geographical location and economic class, interaction between people was limited.

Social media communication technology is made up of individuals that are connected to one another by ideas, values, trade, and much more. Social Networking was a function that was conducted by the famous and wealthy at private gatherings. People would exchange contacts and ideas at these extravagant events.

Communication has been instrumental to a large extent to the growth of social networking, and media communication technology. Today there are a lot of online social networking sites where individuals volunteer information about themselves and their social networks. Social networking allows for all people to interact with one another. An online social networking site is a place where a user can create a profile and build a personal network that connects to users from all over the world. What used to be just an interactive activity has today taken the proportions of a global phenomenon that engages tens of millions, and in some cases even billions of Internet users.

A social network allows independent artists, music labels and video content owners to upload share and sell their content to a community of users with interests in the particular media. Users in turn benefit by being able to sample, hear, download and share songs with friends and other members. The social network sites have emerged as a powerful and effective means for people to not only link and get connected but to use these services as effectively as possible. The popularity of social networks is growing more and more each day.

Social Media has become one of the main sources of interaction in modern society and it keeps people connected. It has broken barriers of social classes, economic class, and education, creating a world of activism and awareness. Social Media has become one of the main sources of interaction in modern society and it keeps people aware. It has broken barriers of social classes, economic class, and education, creating a world of activism and awareness. All people should use and have access to social media because of the positive impact it has had on media communication technology and broadcasting.

Facebook, Twitter and other social networking websites have changed the way people communicate with each other. Personal communication used to be about one on one interaction whether in person or over the phone. Even group reunions used to be about one on one. If you had a story to tell you would have a specific audience who was listening to you, and you were limited only to the people you could reach in your social circle or the area you are in. Facebook, Twitter and so many other social media websites and applications have made drastic changes to the way we communicate. Now personal communication involves photos, statuses, Likes, and re-shares. When a photo is posted it is shown to only your online friends, depending on your privacy settings, you can share to even more people and allow the online content you share to be public and viewed by every user on your social network of choice. Therefore, your story can be transmitted to a large group of people, most of who you may have never been able to convey a message to before social media. We consciously make the decision as to what we want people to see on our social media profile pages. A photo is only but an instant, a very limited snapshot, of everything else in the real world image.

Facebook, Twitter and other social media websites are tools that allow everyone to stay in touch, easily and quickly. Before social media, there was no mass personal information sharing, other than sending a mass email. Many argue that Facebook and Twitter allow for bonds to stay strong and friends and family to stay in contact. This point is valid since before Facebook if someone wanted to know about another person they had to actively seek information. Facebook presents information to you in the “news feed,” just as a newspaper presents its news. Going by the concept of technology is what we make of it, Facebook allows you to stay close with people you are already close with, or build relationships with people and users you would have never met in person.

Personal communication is as important as ever, the difference lies within the way we communicate. Being aware and conscious about your use of social media and its possible effects allows for intelligent decisions. Though Facebook has radically changed the way we communicate, creating our lives into public forums

Where we choose what people see, as well as intensifying our societal need for independence, this section does not call for you to erase your Facebook page, it is the opposite, it seeks to highlight the way Facebook has changed communication in attempt that you will learn from it.

I will be describing the impact in media communication technology; let us beginning with Facebook. Facebook was started in 2004 formally named “The Facebook”. There are now over 1 billion active users every month. Twitter was created and in 2006. These two forms of media technology are the heavyweights of the social networks. Social media allows people to communicate with people all over the world, reconnect with old friends, say happy birthday to a relative, market your business or products, share a funny video, or start a peaceful protest that will lead to a revolution, and much more.

Social media technology drove the success of president Barack Obama’s campaign in 2006. His technology adviser Chris Hughes assisted him. Obama made history and had a successful campaign and could not have become president without the massive online outreach to voters. Social media technology like Twitter allows you one hundred and forty characters to convey your message to the public. News can be spread rapidly, through social media like Facebook and Twitter instantly. It is informal way of communicating to people without them having to reply.

Forty-eight percent of eighteen to thirty-four year olds check Facebook every morning. More than thirty percent of the entire users on Facebook are over thirty-five years old. Seventy-two percent of the United States web audience is on Facebook. Fifty-seven percent of people talk online more than they do in real life. Forty-eight percent of Americans receive their news through Facebook. Seven hundred fifty million photos were uploaded to Facebook over the weekend of new years 2013. Every twenty minutes there are over one million links shared, one point million tagged photos, about three million photos uploaded, over ten million comments made over one point five million wall post, and close to three million messages sent through Facebook every twenty minutes on Facebook. Social media has help to create a global connection. Social networks and social media enable democracy and activism to mobilize. Increase access to information and improves education. Encourages accountability and transparency.   Influences the media through citizen journalism.

Social media has influenced social change. In countries like Jamaica the health workers there distribute information about HIV via online social media networks. Citizens in Mexico are using social media to report information about drugs wars and cartels. In India acts of corruption are reported via social media channels. Over 30 million people viewed a fund raising video for Syria by Save the Children. The Ushahidi platform uses social media to locate people in the aftermath of a devastating natural disaster or conflict such as the massive earthquakes in Haiti tsunamis in Japan and typhoons in the pacific saving thousands of lives in danger. Social Media revolutions have helped topple governments around the world in countries such as, Libya, Egypt, Iran, Yemen, Jordan and so many more to come. Countries that have fallen behind Europe and the United States when it comes to mobile technology are advancing at a rapid rate. In 2008 china has gone from only 17.6 million mobile Internet users to 464 million in 2013. As of 2014 there are more mobile phones in the world than there are toothbrushes Social media has become one of the main sources of interaction in modern society and it keeps people connected. Social media has broken barriers of social class, economic class, and education, creating a world of activism and awareness.

Internet and Social Media

Yes, I believe everyone online is social because even if your not logged into a social network site, people are sending emails or doing something that requires a response. In 2016, being online means to have access or be linked to a cyber network. When people going online, even if there not computer savvy, they’re looking for information or to connect with others. My mom does not know a lot about computers; however, watches a lot of daytime talk shows, on television, that instruct her to go online to their website or app to receive free tickets. My mom attends these shows and she’s forced to use the Internet.

The article “Great Wall of Facebook: The Social Network’s Plan to Dominate the Internet — and Keep Google Out,” by Fred Vogelstein, give prospective into the information battle between Google and Facebook. The information war began when “Microsoft, Google’s sworn enemy, would be making the investment … $240 million for a 1.6 percent stake in (Vogelstein, 2016)” Facebook. Since then Facebook has become a legitimate rivalry to Google. The different between the companies is the respected information they both hold. Google collects information about users search history and sell that information to advertising company. Facebook has “more than 200 million people—about one-fifth of all Internet users, that they spend an average of 20 minutes on the site every day (Vogelstein, 2016)” and collects users generated information; However, can not sell that information to advertisement companies because of the privacy concerns. Google is leading the war because their making the higher profit; however, Facebooks has more users.

The article “the Web Means the End of Forgetting,” by Jeffrey Rosen, was about the Internet keeping wrong or outdated information.  A person who has committed crimes, when you search for them online, appears in the search engine. The Argument is when someone has made a mistake if should not follow them forever. If you been a good person your entire life, one mistake should not change that perception. Information that is incorrect or has changed need to be updated.

Is everyone online?

According to the article “Great Wall of Facebook”” more than 200 million people about, one- fifth of all Internet users have a Facebook account” These number says much about the popularity of Facebook. The amount of online users that have Facebook accounts is continually growing. Facebook users disclose more information than any other site, including google. Facebook is a baby company compare to Google, however Google has made it known that that would like to partnership with Facebook. Many of Googles former employee have left the long standing company to join forces with Mark Zuckerberg to help establish Facebook in the world of social media.

In the article “The Web Means the End to Forgetting” Jeffrey Rosen spoke of a 25-year-old teacher in training and how she was denied her teaching degree because of an image she posted online with a cup of alcohol in her hands. I was in fact familiar with the story, but not so much the details. When people post pictures, quotes, rants and videos online their no longer the owner of this footage, it become public property. That is a very scary reality that many people such as myself often forget. Companies and other government officials, however never forgets this. “According to recent surveys 75 percent of U.S recruiters and Human Resource department do online reach about their candidates.” The fact that they can use this information to judge or discriminate against someone is quite alarming. Moreover, the data is never lost and can resurface at any given time. Like Jeffery Rosen stated there is no second chance with digital media and social media in place. With the advancement of social media people are no longer able to make childish mistake and eventually learn from their ways. I could not imagine being young and naive in this era where all my mistakes are documented and eventually used against me. Before social media people made mistakes and most of the time it went unnoticed, unfortunately not anymore and we( the people) have ourselves to thank. “Has scholars propose creating new legal rights to force web sites to remove false and slanderous statements.” Great strides are being made, however this is still not enough. People need to become more aware of their online posting and not so eager to share personal moments with complete strangers on the World Wide Web.

Being Social Online

Having access to the internet is an important tool in our society.  Being able to stay connected to society is something we can’t live without.  With popular companies like Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter, Goggle, etc… Knowing we can’t live without this tool, it brings a lot of competition between these companies.  In the reading “Great Wall of Facebook: The Social Network’s Plan to Dominate the Internet — and Keep Google Out” gives us inside news on what it is like to be a high grossing company and trying to buy out companies that they feel are a threat to their business in losing revenues.

Weather people know it or not everyone that goes online is social, maybe with a low percentage of people who are not but majority rules.  When Facebook first started it was a site to stay connected with friends and family, skip to a few years later look at Facebook now, it’s like a news headquarters.  You can now know what’s happening around the world in an instant without even turning on the television and people love Facebook for this idea because of the convenience it provides.  Google on the other hand, who doesn’t have access features like Facebook does, goes toe to toe with them for the simple fact people can’t live without Facebook and Google and one company is bringing in more money than the other company.

To be social, in 2016 means keeping up with everything possible.  To be social in today’s time is getting your opinion heard and wanting everyone to know who you are. Since Facebook uphold all the features, that’s why Google wants to take over.

The Internet and Social Media

“Reclaiming Our (Real) Lives from Social Media” The author made a real valid point on how time consuming social media can be. It’s so bizarre on how much we consume from it and how much it takes away from what we can actually be doing. I know a lot of people who are victim to procrastination due to social media. It all sums up to balance. Their was a time when I would check my social media pages like Myspace, and twitter and for some time Instagram the moment I wake up. I literally I felt like these social media outlets was the real world and what life was about. As I got older I started to distance myself from it what helped me was every semester I started I stayed away from social media more and more because I wanted to make sure my grades were good. The more I did this the less important I seen these social outlets were and I understood that the same people will still be one when I get back talking about the same thing.

I’m Quitting Social Media to Learn What I Actually Like” the addiction phase of social media is serious. Trying to let go is a hard thing it’s like a drug, anxiety and depression were good examples the author used. The simple fact that I can know everything I want to know about a person by clicking on some photos and reading post is incredible who wouldn’t assume that social media is what the real world is like, you gain an experience of the world by witnessing photos and videos and sometimes may encourage you to explore things and share that experience with your friends. The key to all of this is balance as well. But side note if there is a time that you don’t see as much feeds on any social media pages it doesn’t really mean people have found a balance it just means people are board and are waiting for a new social media page to be created.

“Why some 13-year-olds check social media 100 times a day” Well the author made it clear why teens check their social media pages so many times a day. 61% is for likes and comments, this is a high for teens this gives them their status in life. 36% to see if their friends are having fun without them, this is the lonely stage, and not wanting to feel like the only one who is not active. 21% yes cyberbullying has been and will be on ongoing issue on any social media page.

Activity

image image image image image image image image image image

My activity was to split the class into three groups one group was the female gaming community, the second was the Indie gaming company, and the third was the Triple-A companies. Both gaming companies had to come up with 8 to 10 ideas that would bring more women into the gaming community.

In my opinion, the activity was a great success because everyone one interacted with one another and came up with great ideas, as well as had fun. That was the point of the activity to have fun while everyone comes up with ideas.

Yes, the goals for the activity were met perfectly.

I learned that even if people don’t game as much that they can still have fun coming up with ideas and working together to try to achieve a common goal.

To take this project forward, I would come up with a set of questions and see how many women game at Lehman. I would then have a set amount of games for them to play varying in a genre, difficulty, and platform. The I would have them play those games within a weeks time. Then after that, I would ask them a set of questions about their experiences with gaming.

Electronic Games and Entertainment

Video gaming is a popular hobby amongst many teenagers, adolescents, and even adults. Over the years, video games have gone through many different transformations to make the user experience more enjoyable.  In the article 16 Trends That Will Define the Future of Video Games it argues that video games is a factor that forms bonds and helps people connect to those with similar interest, especially when a parent wants to build a relationship with their children. It says “Through a recent survey of UK families, the channel found that 75% of parents they surveyed now play video games with their children, and that children aged 10 or under take most of their gaming recommendations from their parents.” It also talks about how more children under 11 are becoming connected to entertainment sources through tablets and smartphones, so major corporations like Disney and Nickelodeon have benefitted from the virtual exploration.

How A Viedogame God Inspired a Twitter Doppelganger talks about the concept of giving gamers more control and authority of video games, instead of just being slaves to what is given to us. Tanz talks about a popular video game, Populous, that was made as a result of this concept. It say “Populous showed that videogames could be more than movies with joysticks—they could be a radically new narrative art form.” The success of the new video game gave video game designer, Peter Molyneux, the inspiration and courage to also put the idea of virtual gamer freedom into practice. After years of designing, Molyneux started to believe that his best work was behind him, he had created many games with the same concept, and was under the impression that the audience was starting to get bored with his work, but through many trials and tribulations, he was able to find a new perspective on gaming, which excited the gamers and keep their interest. This is where we see the dedication and the passion that is needed to be a part of this industry.

Digital Marketing and Public Relations

First reading “How Internet Marketing Will Affect Various Industries in 2015” Good point the author brought up is making a social media page of fall behind. Companies have to understand, that in order to reach out to a wide demographic they need to reach out to a place where everyone is on. The older audience wont always be around, companies have to start looking for the younger generation and make ads appealing for them. Another valid point is getting advertising on mobile devices. Just how people are now getting television and film content on mobile device companies need to head in that direction and get ad campaigns on the go. And also target audience this campaign works for just about every site, example would be from a clothing store I buy from which is Supreme, they give an updated email of what new clothing would be releasing in the future week and in a way this is affective like movie previews, because it has everyone anticipating the release date. Real-Time marketing, this works real well for sneaker heads, Twitter gets so much traffic when it comes to sneaker release dates it gets everyone involved and interactive with each other and the company.

Second reading “Viral Marketing for the Real World” big-seed marketing. I don’t remember the cause but I remember Burger King coming up with some good marketing schemes that went viral, like getting people to unfriend there Facebook friends for the return of a whopper it was called “Burger King Lets People Sacrifice Friendships for Whoppers”. People would have to unfriend 10 friends from Facebook to get a free whopper coupon and this actually worked this scheme went viral very fast.

And third “5 Key Viral Marketing Tactics Proven to Work” I think number 3 on the list was valid, to make your product stand out even if it may be the same thing, and using the blender to crush relevant things like iPhone products and Justin Bieber DVDs was a very smart tactic. And number 4 rewarding customers, some companies create blog sites just to create a closer relationship with there audience and those that partake in the blog sometimes get rewarded with free products or coupons in return.

Impact of Gaming

Rayshawn Parrilla

Playing games on a computer, video game console or handheld device is a daily activity part of human culture.  It’s an interesting and unique form of human interaction with the development of a person’s thought.  Initially, gaming was introduced to the public as a source of entertainment as well as keeping children busy.  As digital distribution continues to grow, the market for video games expanded.  Throughout the years, Its dominated factors has lead to both negative and positive influences.

Gaming has become a common topic for decades.  It has been passed down generations, from parents on to their children as they shared a love and passion within it.  Before electronics was developed, “tic-tac-toe” was a popular form of gaming.  This particular game was used as an “optimal strategy,” according the article “A Theory of Fun for Game Design.”  Its academic process is designed to increase children’s brains in terms of “complexity theory.”  Games including Gomoku, and Qubic were also used as teaching tools for our children.   Their main objective of the game helps children improve their intelligence as well as analyze mathematics.  Since the rise of technology, video games have becoming more accessible.  The release of computers, smart phones and tablets has all been driven factors for people to connect with gaming.  However, the new role of video games may allow children to behave differently from their normal persona.  Children who play violent video games, intend to develop aggressive behavior due to the repeated violent images found within its story medium.  Gaming also appears to form an addiction issue.  The constant use takes away human connections.  Children will place themselves in front of the TV or handheld device and cast out themselves out from real life experiences, family and friends.  These actions results to poor socialization skills.  From console gaming to handheld gaming, its mainstream form of entertainment will continue to have an effect on modern culture.

There are many conflicting thoughts and benefits regarding the topic of video games.  The effect of video games, negative or positive relies on how the content is accepted.  With the proper guidance, video games can more over benefit society rather than direct them in the wrong direction.  Its content can be used as an academic process which will improve their train of thought.  We are in full control as well as how we respond to its content.
