The Loss of Books, Newspapers & Magazines

In today’s new age of technology books are considered to be a thing of the past, they are essentially becoming artifacts as time goes on and people are starting to appreciate them less and less because they are being replaced by things like eBook and kindle, which are both digital. Libraries have basically put bookshops across the world in jeopardy because of its public nature. People would rather sample a free product than to pay for it, but even though authors and publishers are struggling to make a living for themselves, they still have a sentimental connection to libraries because it is a community for readers to connect with their favorite writers, or to even explore new writers. The free reading that is encouraged by libraries is what makes it easy for people to forget that books are a part of the entertainment industry.

In “The End of Books” it talks about the innovation of the hyperlink, which the technology that the World Wide Web is built on that allows people to search and share information in a quick and easy manner. The new idea of the real world consists of video transmissions, cellular phones, fax machines, and computer networks, and that many young people are becoming unfamiliar with concept of print medium because it is not as contemparay as digital media. In the article it says, “But the freedom from the tyranny of the line is perceived as only really possible now at last with the advent of hypertext, written and read on the computer, where the line in fact does not exist unless one invents and implants it in the text”. The “line” that the author is referring to is too restrictive and it separate the roles of reader and writer. Where hypertext mediums, such as blogs or allows people to give their opinion and accept criticism. Wikipedia and Google are also in this category because it is interactive and helps people connects to other links that the web page may offer.

The Loss of Books, Newspapers & Magazines

First reading “Libraries ‘Have Had Their Day’, Says Horrible Histories Author” Terry Deary argues that libraries are “no Longer relevant (Deary)”. I can say public libraries when it comes to novels may no longer be relevant because the internet made it much easier for users to get access on books. But, as for colleges libraries are pretty much needed, even-though we may use the online school library instead. But, the author also made another good point stating that since libraries has been servicing over 150 years of free novels, we naturally feel entitled to never have to pay for books. Which is true I myself when it comes to school text books first option always try to find the book for free, but I can also say the same about music and both are considered some form of entertainment. “I’m not attacking libraries. I’m attacking the concept behind libraries, which is no longer relevant (Deary)”. Libraries for me have created a great service, but I can also understand the authors argument there should have been a way to monetize and pay authors who books get used from the library, the found an alternative with music as far as streaming even-though like Tidal. Libraries can become more relevant in other fields I think in this day in age all public libraries need to revamp what service they are providing, especially trying to keep up with this technological world.

Second reading “The End of Books” the old way of reading is over thanks to hypertext, which is the new age of our culture in the aspect of literature, education, criticism and scholarship. Thoughts on this is books will eventually become an online only product. I’m sure not every book lover would be happy about this concept, this is part of the reason libraries and book stores are running out of business. I feel in the future Barnes & Nobles would be an Amazon version of ecommerce for books.

The Effects Of Media Culture

With the rise of technology and the internet came with it social media. Social media has engulfed all of our lives regardless if we personally use it very often because even if we don’t use it that often the people around us are addicted to it. There are people that before they go to sleep and when they wake up check all their social media websites and this is from my own knowledge of people my age. When you think about the generation born in the 2000’s they are being completely engulfed in this digital age. Parents who don’t want to deal with their kids just have to give them a laptop or iPad to play with, but that is the wrong response to be giving towards their children. These kids are born with innate comprehension of how these devices work and this creates a divide between their parents and them. Some parents then think they are smart enough to monitor their children’s internet usage or stop them from using certain website but in reality because of the gap between generations the kids can maneuver the internet better than anyone else.

Now social media has effected all of us drastically. All social media is are platforms for us as individuals to express ourself and show a specific side of us. This control over the content that people see of ourselves allows us to be extremely meticulous and paint a picture that may not be who we actually are. Then we as human beings don’t like to show people our bad sides or our mistakes and this then makes our lives on Facebook and Instagram have the possibility of looking perfect or flawless. We travel to a bunch of places, we are always going out to eat, or hanging out with friends. Yet we don’t show how you hate your job, or your family issues or how bad that trip to Greece actually was. This creates a near perfect image of ourselves for the general public and when everyone is doing that it can cause people to become depressed if they aren’t media literate. Some people look at it and think how come I can’t be like them or live their life and become self conscious. This leads into the article for this week “The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents,  and Families” which in it talks about various concerns towards kids using the internet and its effects. One of the effects they talk about is a concept called “Facebook Depression”. This is caused when a teenager or pre-teen uses Facebook so much it leads to the point that they exhibit symptoms of depression. This is all because of what I mentioned before they compare their own lives to everyone else’s they see and feel inadequate. We need to raise our kids with media literacy at a young age because they are already born into this digital world. Media culture has affected how we do business, stay in touch with people, make fundraisers, get accepted to college, and even get a job. We all need to be careful what we do and what our children do on the internet because everywhere we go online leaves a digital footprint.

The effects of Media culture

Media’s effects on us as a society have been profound. It seems to have infiltrated almost every aspect of our lives, especially when it comes to the way we connect with each other. Social media has taken the place of personal interaction. While increasing our ability to obtain information, it also decreases our attention spans, which is not helpful in this era of instant gratification. With most things a click away, it has changed the way we search for information and where we go to get it. Personally, I don’t watch the news, but I know after 8 mins on Facebook that I’ll leave more informed. I was not aware of their genius use of algorithms, but it answers a lot of questions as to why my news feed is a certain way. Many “new” media sites and projects have expanded the realm of “old media” in incredible ways and brought it directly to us. It’s convenience is matched by its usefulness. There will be pros and cons to everything, and as infuriating as social media can be, it is a very necessary tool in these digital times. There are countless people I would never even talk to, if not for social media. The internet has come a long way, and “new” media will continue to evolve, with or without us. I’d like to be ahead of the curve. Despite its hindering long term effects, you can’t help but appreciate it has done and what it can do. The next crucial step is to better inform people of the power and danger of these sites. The communication between parents and children is imperative now, especially because so many kids are not equipped to decide what is safe or not. Back in the day, social media was for fun, now its a digital version of your life. No matter what age, care must taken participating – I think people miss that. No one should have to be victim to cyberbullying, or indentity theft, but alas, these happen in the cold world that is the 21st century.

In our current society social media has altered the way of life and values. Media has altered values and living conditions of humanity because society constantly main priorities at times are how they are perceived through social media. People of this day and age focus more on creating an identity for their profiles rather then focusing on values that create personal growth. Social media can be harmful for today’s youth as stated by the American Academy of Pediatrics because it can lead to depression. If users are not contacted or accepted by peers or specific group of people can create disruptive behavior and concerns. The consumption of social media information can alter ones personality because one begins to believe and care more for their life on the web. They way one is perceived on the web plays a major role in ones way of life. Not only can social media lead to depression it can also misguide younger users and influence them to do things that are irrational just to grab the attention of his or her peers.

Where there is a negative there’s always a positive. Not only does social media bring negative concerns and reactions it can also educate its users. Social media cites can be used as a source for education because it can allow its users to receive feedback and options on certain topics that concern them. For our youth it is a tool that can decrease our country illiteracy rates as users are constantly forced to read and write in order to be a member of the certain social media community.

Social media has affected society in the smallest ways possible. In our current society many employers are interested in ones social media profiles in order to retrieve information of a specific candidate. Not only in work places one is requested for ones social media info, when one signs up for a specific application a social media tool is requested upon acquirement of the app. Social media has transformed society in a radical way. I’m very curious on how important social media will be moving forward.

Media’s Effect on Society

Since the dawn of the new digital era of media has come it has had its lasting effects on society. These effects have stemmed from both positive as well as negative roots that have become more apparent as media continues to gain popularity. The articles (from this week’s reading) “Clinical Report-The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents, and Families” released by the American Academy of Pediatrics [Article 1] and “How Facebook Is Changing the Way Its Users Consume Journalism” by Ravi Somaiya [Article 2] elaborate on the advantages the users of media outlets have along with the negative issues it can create. The overall theme that media today brings to the table is the focus on personalization; expressing one’s self online through the sharing of interests, pictures, and important events. Nonetheless  media offers individuals the oppurtunity to access and manipulate a vast amount of information. How individuals use that power determines the effect that media has on it’s users and ultimately society.

Social media, one of the main forms of media outlets present today, provides its users with a more selective perspective of the world today. Adults and more commonly adolescents spend the majority of their time on some form of media. According to article 2, “1.3 billion people log into Facebook monthly” which is close to a fifth of the world’s population. In article 1, there are several examples of the positives that users can gain from participating and engaging on social media outlets. Some of these positives include “enhanced communication, social connection and technical skills” with those who share the same interests, as well as a personal perspective of “self, community, and of the world”. The benefits of social media are also present through the business and health perspective. Health-wise, media bridges the gap between medical information and the potential patient who’s in distress and is need of the info. Business-wise, media allows companies to thrive on advertisement and through online purchases. Article 2 touches on media’s effect on the business of news and news publication; how media has caused newspapers and magazines to transition from printed issues to online individual articles being published by the reader’s demand. This article speaks on how media is one of the main outlets for news nowadays, one of the specific ones is Facebook;  article 2 states that “30% of adults get their news through Facebook. Media generally has helped put society on the fast track to receiving personalized and instant information,

As great as social media can be, it still poses several issues. These issues can vary between things like privacy/safety concerns, health issues, and online conflicts. Children and teenagers are the groups of individuals that are at most risk to endure any of the negative issues that media brings. Article 1 brings to light how adolescents are experiencing their “social and emotional development through the internet and cellphones” rather than face to face. The issue of lacking self regulation along with being easily influenced by peer pressure, and the troubles that follow such behavior are also touched in the first article. Article 2 dives deeper into what is the main issue with media is; which is the temptation to shut out any opinions or arguments that differ or go against your own. The case with most media outlets is that it give its users the power of controlling who they can engage with and whom they do not wish to do so. This sort of habitual behavior can easily detach some individuals from the true world that lies beyond their cellphone screen.

The introduction of media has turned our society into an extremely demand-favored society in terms of outlet. On the bright side of media, people now have access to any piece of information that they could possibly need. Through media, individuals are able to express themselves in any way, shape, or form with almost no limitations; media basically gives every person a voice and an opportunity for them to network. Personalization is as much a curse as it is a blessing.  The idea that fillers, essentially unimportant pieces of information, that are irrelevant to an individual can be easily hidden or overlooked has in a sense clouded the judgement of society as a whole. While having a personalized feed of information and news can be comfortable, it can cause individuals to detach themselves from what they don’t relate to or agree to. It can be great and beneficial for “engagement” for business, companies, and corporations who have ties to various media outlets; who essentially want users to spend as much time as possible on their sites. In the end, personalization can lead an individual to develop a false sense of superiority that only exists online and disappears when they log off of the “perfect” virtual life that they have created for themselves.

Over the years, social media has made one of the biggest impacts on our society.  Many people around the world participate in the activities and fundamentals social media has to offer.  Some of your popular media websites today includes instagram, facebook, and twitter.  When first originated, its main objective was designed to connect like minded people as well as engage in fun activities.  As media websites evolved, it formed negative and positive effects due to its use.

Taking the world by storm, social media has been dominantly influential to many.  Children are mainly targeted online, becoming victims of the negative trends social media offers.  According to the article “Clinical Report,” children are imposed by disturbed acts online including cyber bullying, sexual content and peer pressure.  Although in the eyes of children, social media appears to be fun, they fail to realize its negativity.  It also forms a distraction to their learning abilities as children appear to substitute their school work for media websites.  It takes away their concentration and intelligence.  Parents are at fault also, as they lack in monitoring their children online.  Parents should educate their children on the proper use of social media as well as using it responsibly.

Although media websites portrays negative influences, its contributions can also have a positive impact on our society.  Online websites can be beneficial when it informs us of current important news that revolves around the world and community.  Websites like facebook also displays stories we find extremely interesting and feeds positive knowledge that may apply to our everyday life.  According the article “How Facebook is Changing the way its Users Consume Journalism,” 30 percent of people rely on facebook as a source of information and news.  Children can also benefit as they can connect with one another for school activities and projects leading to a great academic performance.  It is clear the media has a tremendous impact on our culture.  We will have to determine ourselves whether it will have a positive or negative impact on our lives.

Class 2: The Effects of Media Culture

How has media affected us?

In my opinion, social media has affected our society in a good, but majority of a bad way. The clinical report “The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents, and Families, American Academy of Pediatrics,” made various points on how social media plays a huge part on children and teens alike.
The pros of social media are:
1. That we can network with people all over the world with just the click of a button.
2. That we can stay in touch with family and friends through pictures and videos without having to travel miles.
3. Certain technology has allowed us to become smarter and allowed us to complete more tasks than we might have without it.
4. You can see people who might be going thorough whatever issues you may have and learn how to overcome them by following their paths.

The cons of social media are:
1. Cyber bullying, sexting, and low self esteem
2. The fact that children and teens are more tech savvy than
their parents, lets them get away with more.
3. It allows children access to restricted sites, sometimes without their parents knowledge.
4. It takes away the art of conversation and human contact.
5. The younger generation no longer uses books or hardcover material.
6. You can be anyone you want to be on the internet. People hide behind the screen and ridicule or judge for the same things they are probably going through

I believe all of this technology has broken down the barriers of communication. Have you recently tried to talk to a 14yr old or a 21yr old? They cant look you in the eye, they panic if they are away from their phones or devices for 5 minutes. They look up to internet stars and images of people who have nothing on the inside. I understand that it is a new way of learning, but why can’t we instill our old traditions as well. Mathematics has changed, students no longer need books, even in this class we barely need paper/pen due to posting on blogs and websites, or typing notes on our tablets/phones. I guess it’s nice that we are in the “technology” age, because we have come a long way from typewriters and horses, but i would enjoy it if we had a little bit more integrity as people.

In “How Facebook Is Changing the Way Its Users Consume Journalism,” I learned that the different news feeds and advertisements that come across our timeline are purposely put there to assist in establishing what we as a consumer want to read or see. I’ve always wondered if hitting the like button actually made a difference. In this article it’s clear that it does and that our personal preferences are taken into consideration way more than we think about. I like the idea of a computer code filtering out what I deem unnecessary. I personally don’t watch the news, or read newspapers. I usually only know what is happening because of what is on my feed that is shared by followers or friends, or if a family member calls to update me on current events.
I agree with Mr. Marra when he says, “We try to explicitly view ourselves as not editors. We don’t want to have editorial judgment over the content that’s in your feed. You’ve made your friends, you’ve connected to the pages that you want to connect to and you’re the best decider for the things that you care about.” He wants it to be less about you reading an actual newspaper, and more about you enjoying what you read on your feed coupled with you getting your fill of what YOU deem important.

The Effects Media has on Society

Media is fast growing every minute of the day.  With new social sites and apps being generated, the use of technology has changed our society drastically in both a positive and negative way.

The use of media has become a well dependent tool in today’s generation.  It helps the world to stay connected easily, as well as to be in a state of euphoria.  You can consider media to be a helping hand indeed to others, as it has helped with exposure of yourself or brand to be known publicly in a very fast and easy way, getting your voiced to be heard, and as well as keeping society aware of the different income and outcomes being produced widely around the world.  Media has well-made living life a lot easier for many people, as it is now convenient to learn and know information a lot faster.

As described in the articles, it states social sites helps with stress, depression, and anxiety because it is easier to talk about your problems and gather solutions to improve your health condition.  Another benefit, of media affecting our current society, is the amount of jobs that are being offered to people to help the launch of a company.

While all of these are good points, media has also produced much negativity to our society as a whole. Social sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, snapchat, YouTube, etc… has really placed a hold on life itself. The urge of wanting to be connected with others makes us loose focus on what’s important around us especially for the upbringing of the adolescent.  The effects social sites have on adolescent are very high as their privacy is no longer private.  People on social sites post many statements about themselves or make videos which they don’t realize they’re making themselves a target for cyber-bullying.  The most innocent picture, text, or video you may post can turn into the most horrible thing you ever posted with just a few mean comments.  So instead of helping your health condition become better, it only worsens.

With social sites slowly taking over, it makes adolescents believe that everybody must be the same, instead of being original.  Everybody is copying each other because it’s the “Coolest thing” out at the time being.  Social media is very addicting, which makes the people of society become very restless.  Instead of helping us become happy, it makes us unhappy.  With many teens now having cellphones and social media accounts, it makes young adolescents victims to try drugs or other dangerous things, at such a very early age with being exposed to pictures of other people trying it and so it makes them feel obligated to try it also.

Social Media place fear on many people that they’re missing out on something important, when there is a whole world out there to be explored which is more important than a website in my opinion.

Effect of Media Culture

I can say from my own experience using the internet and social media, kids need to be guided when using them.  The problem was that many parents were not educated on how to guide their children to use these tools, because they did not grow up with them. You can’t fight an enemy you don’t understand. Also, Facebook has created a platform to communicate and share information with a lot of people, but we have to draw a line between what we share and what we keep private. You could have never met someone in person, but by taking a scroll down their timeline or looking at their Instagram you can learn a lot about them. We have to get back to getting to know people by interacting with them rather than finding out who they are by looking at their posts. Lastly, we are creating a culture that validates ourselves by how many likes we got on our last posts or picture. This can cause people to get depressed and develop self-doubt, but we have to stop looking for validation from others and love ourselves.
