Final paper: Will Microchip Implant be the Future of Technology ?

Wilfred Bevans

Will Microchips Implants be the Future of Technology?

The next big thing in digital media could possibly be microchips. Not just any ordinary microchips, microchips that are implanted into humans I’m talking full blown Bourne Identity. A quick definition of microchips implant is basically a ID device or a RFID transponder which is a device that can pick up radio frequency and transmit it, and it is implanted into the body of a human being. This microchip is the size of a grain of rice, the functionality of the microchip implant can digitize your personal identification, maybe your medical history, what medicine you use, if you have any allergies and maybe your contact information.

This experiment was not a recent development for the RFID implant has been in process since 1998 by a British scientist by the name of Kevin Warwick. But, enough background information on the product let’s get into the “nitty gritty” of why scientist and people may find this important to have or may not find this device important to have.

Is the microchip implant a digital? analog? a service? an object?

Well, I believe that the microchip implant is both a digital and an object, think of the microchip implant as a software input to a human cloud system. Why? Well because all the information on who you are will be stored in a server someone where and will allow you to access your information when needed. This device will completely put plastic to rest, we will no longer need to walk around with so much external information, information on who we are will completely become internal.

The microchip implant is here to track us; the tracker will use the RFID device to help support the functionalities of the microchip. “Microchip implants like the one pet owners use to track their dogs and cats could become commonplace in humans as shortly as 10 years” the trackers were already tested in animals with the RFID. The microchip would come with some advantages like kidnappers, this is great for little children this will help law enforcement track those who does criminal activity. The microchip will be a mandatory thing fro all children, this process could possibly start 2017 or maybe years later, they already tried this in various parts around the world. “In various places all over the world, there are individuals who open doors, start cars, and control their computers with a mere gesture of their hands or arms.” instead of making digital car keys we will be in the age where car keys are n longer needed the point of the microchip to me seems the extinction of a lot of tools/ physical support. Humans will also probably be able to control their pc and television with simple hand gestures. They already have automatic doors that can recognize homeowners and open automatically and also created apps that can help keep track of activity while people are away from their house, with the microchip implant your smart door will have a more accurate description on the people who lives at home which causes much greater security.

Some people voluntarily became testers to the microchip implant, what most of them are apart of a group that advocates the biohacking concept, the concept of biohacking was to enhance the human body. Biohacking would have potential to take the human body beyond the limits, the do-it-yourself cyber device would help enhance the functionalities your body will be able to produce more efficient. “Many biohackers also identify with a broader movement known as transhumanism” the deal with the transhumanism people believe with this tech people will be able to transform themselves through the use of technology becoming the perfect human being. The procedure that will get the microchip in the human body would be through a hypodermic needle and also with a vaccine this needle will inject the rice grain chip into the arms, wrist, or hands of the person. The chip will of course come with a different number code for each individual this way each person can be identify and people would no longer have to worry about identity theft. This will also help people stay connected with each other.

Describe your audience – who is this for? Is it a product? Art installation?

Well this design is for everyone’s use. It is a product that help enhance what it is to be human. This product is made to create a new generation of human beings; the advantages would be so valuable you would actually be losing out. Some reports say’s that the chip will be a mandatory thing to have to be a citizen, In the UK they already started implanting microchips into new born children. “to some degree the future is now, with biometric technology already being used in certain wide-scale applications” example would be the hand-scanning payment method which is another way people can make purchases with the scan of their hands. This new way of payment is being tested in the southern part of Sweden, RFID is the source of how all things work. We all already have the RFID tracker in our phones and the device keeps track of us already our movements our locations, our conversations are saved to a database even if we delete them ourselves and our pictures. Whatever information we store on our phones have been saved to other external database, and really us having microchips implanted in us would be no different.

How will you gain interest and traction for your idea?

The thought of having microchips implanted into humans will first off have to accepted by society it’s self. The older generation like myself would not approve of this change, I’m usually a person who is all for the change to make a better society however, this would be one change I will not be comfortable with. The older generation will to be uncomfortable with chips implanted in them, the older generation already are uncomfortable with the internet and the thought of the internet being on their phone. So far seems impossible to get anyone to gain interest. But, lets look at the younger populations, the younger population would love this new technology if you can incorporate it with something of their interest. “teens and younger adults will be roaming the streets while sporting cool shades, interactive web surfing and the capability to record everything around them and upload it to the internet instantly.” This is what the younger kids feed off of being interactive with their friends instantly even when they are not around each other, communication would be the key to interest and traction to the new technology of chip implants. Kids never want to be outdated with technology they will do anything to keep up with tech just as they do with fashion, the chip will be an attraction just as a smartphone. Over-time this will lead the minority who accepts the microchip into the majority the chip can become our new social security. You will eventually need this chip for government services, this chip will absolutely eliminate cash from society, there will be no need for cash when your chip can be accessed as a credit card.

What makes your project stand out among others?

This new tech is definitely one of a kind, this technology is for the enhancement of the human race and the protection of humans personal and medical information. The chip implant is a product that is meant to change society living as a whole, bringing us to the ages of Bourne Identity and iRobot.

Pros:

Would make living much more convenient, humans can access whatever they want with just a wave of a hand, the chip will be able to keep children from getting kidnapped, this will also help reduced crime since everyone has a unique number there will be no mix-up or falsely accusations on any individual. Humans will be able to make purchases at their convenience no more worrying about stolen or lost of money, no longer have to worry about identity theft. This will be one of the reasons cash will no longer exist, the chip will also help reduce crime, the selling of drugs many illegal activities will be reduced. Makes health visits to doctor’s more efficient, health history, medication and insurance can be stored in the chip.

Cons:

No one wants the feeling of being controlled by the Government. If society does, in fact, agree with the microchip implants and money becomes strictly digital what happen to those who are scared of change. Would we want to live in a society where humans continuously get neglected in a time of need if so, does this not contradict the point of the microchip which is making society better. Yes, an ordinary person may not be able to steal from another but what about people who can hack? What if a hacker can get into your microchip by hacking the external database that has all your information stored, or even better what if the hacker can change your identity, evil can still be done in the new society of chip implants. Jobs being able to keep track of your every movement society will no longer feel free.

SAFETY ASPECT IN DESIGN:

When someone chip is hacked all personal, medical, and financial information could be lost, or stolen. This situation would contradict the point of microchip implant. Business should ensure safety. “when we design microchips, it’s important to tell people their safety status. When someone wants to hack your microchip, it should alert you that your information is at risk” Same as banks do when you make an unusual payment, you will be notified immediately and would have to act on blocking hackers, maybe a security app.

Mashups

Mashups is another form of a media outlet that operates on web 2.0 system. Mashups allow parties to create their own version of work generated from two or more sources and share it with the public. Web applications that resemble mashup-like features have been on a rise in digital culture. The internal artistic value behind mashups exemplify why individuals gravitate towards participating in them or creating some of their own. The articles read this week regarding the subject of mashups reveal to readers why such revolutionary concept can have a lasting impact on society and our digital culture.

The very foundation of mashup technology is one of the key elements that makes it such a hazard to participate in. In Mashups: The New Breed of Web App, author Duane Merrill touches on how mashups typically involve individuals using other people’s finished work(s) to begin as a basis for their own. Obviously this can very much lead to a number of problems for the participant, including legal/copyright issues. As students we’re very familiar with the concept of plagiarism; how much different is the general makeup of mashups compared to that of plagiarizing on a written research assignment, presentation, etc? Another major issue regarding mashups revolves around Henry Jenkin’s article Taking the You Out of Youtube and mashup applications like Youtube. Youtube in specific allows individuals to upload any original content they desire, the individuals are the ones who make Youtube function. The issue behind this is the fact that millions of people are giving away free content, which is typically the on-going issues with almost any web 2.0 application. The creators of such platforms thrive on success based off of the work of others; without us as individuals displaying our (free) content none of these applications would be successful. To reiterate my point, individuals do not get benefits/paid for their videos, tweets, blog posts, etc but the corporations behind some of the huge platforms do.

The effect mashups have on media is not all negative but when thinking about the concept of web 2.0 applications and what they’re used for. Arguably it can be said that corporations are “striking gold” when they no longer have to pay others for ideas or insights, it is all there on people’s networking sites for FREE. There is no longer any need for ‘brainstorming” or physical meetings between creative teams when all they can do is simply log into any web applications and there they have the opinions of millions, all at once. Lastly, mashups also cloud individuals’ originality, basing their work off of existing craft can only lead to a biased progression of craft

(No title)

In the First article “Mashups: The New Breed of Web App” It gave me an insight to another type of mashup when the author spoke about mapping, video, shopping etc. I like the the whole idea of the shopping mashup due to the fact most of my important shopping (sneakers) is done online. In 1+1+1=3 The author spook about music mashups and how producers/DJ’s are mixing and splicing two songs together fro two totally different genres and making them sound synchronized as if that was the original song. In the Grey Album article, producer Danger Mouse got into detail about the process it took for him to mashup Jay-Z’s Black Album with The Beatles ‘Grey Album’ and also how he received a cease-and-desist letter courtesy of Mr. Sean Carter due to a protection by the name of “copyright” which leads me to believe that even though mashups are kind off they can be a nuisance and lead to trouble so it’s kind of a yes no answer when we the question arises about “If Mashups are detrimental to the new media culture.” I find the mashup media wave cool and innovative nut I do see the artists side of it if I’m looking at it from a business sense, it’s kind of like mashing up your own drink using Pepsi and throwing an in depth twist on it and trying to capitalize off of it. IT AINT YOURS!!!!. I remember Doritos and Mountain Dew had some kind of mash up soda that supposedly had the drink tasting like Doritos but I believe proper paper work and finances were in order between both companies. This seems more of a Pirate style activity. I guess like everything, if it’s for fun then no foul but when money comes into play I think everyone should be paid.

Mashups

Mashups are a fusion of media. Some kinds of mash ups include Web GPS, Video and Photo, Search and shopping mashups, news mashups. Mashups are beneficial to new media. I am a media student I enjoy the access we are allowed to manipulate media. This topic is a bit similar to the open source discussion because the user has the ability to manipulate the media to improve performance.

The MTV Article about The Grey Album producer Danger Mouse was interesting to read, the process it took to create a new media by using existing media. Media Mashups pushes the boundary’s of media, that is what media technology is for, to be shared, and experience and manipulated. The entire hip-hop genre is based on “mashups” also known as sampling. Also another famous designers and artist Andy Warhol used Mashup techniques in some of his most famous work. Mashups that are in high demand can draw draws attention to the original products.

Mashups

In Mashups: The new breed of Web app the article tells us about what mashups are and then gives us an introduction to what this app can do. There is a different example of mashups such as genres, mapping, photo, video, shopping, etc. Mashups are comprised of three distinct components that come together, The API/provides, the mapping site and the clients web browser. Mashups are something new that has unlimited possibilities.

Another type of mash-up is in the music genre which is what my mind went to first. In the Grey Album Producer, Danger Mouse Explains How He Did It, tells us about how Danger Mouse was inspired to create these mashups. Danger Mouse produced the best compilation of mash-ups from all different types of artist. He started with the Beatles White album, and Jay-Z’s the Black Album and that it what got him started doing many more different mashups

In the article InfoEnclosure, 2.0 talks about the Web 2.0 and its usage. Web 2.0 is really meant for the people who want to be the publisher and the user. Web 2.0 actually gets rid of the middle man and makes it so that we the consumer can publishes the content we want for consumers like us.

The article 1+1+1+1 The New Math of Mashups tells us about how mashups are used in the music community.

Mashups and Web 2.0

Mashups according to Duane Merrill a freelancer explains it as “an exciting genre of interactive Web applications that draw upon content retrieved from external data sources to create entirely new and innovative services”.

This new kind of internal and external data sources combining content over the web shows how the world is transforming through the power of media and digital technology. Henry Jenkins’ article captioned “Taking the You Out of YouTube?” in his introduction of the article expresses; “YouTube, along with Second Life, Flickr, Wikipedia, and MySpace, has emerged as one of the key reference points in contemporary digital culture — emblematic of the move towards what people are calling web 2.0”. He further expresses his predictions about this new culture. “I raised here a few weeks ago. At the heart of the Web 2.0 movement is this idea that there is real value created by tapping the shared wisdom of grassroots communities, composed mostly of fans, hobbyists, and other amateur media makers. I have often celebrated these efforts as helping to pave the way for a more participatory culture — one that will be more diverse and innovative because it expands the range of content we can access”.

Even though media and digital technology have taken over almost everything in our world today. I strongly believe new laws and reforms should be enacted to prevent any bad precedence. As Henry Jenkins says, “if these grassroots efforts are generating value (and in fact, wealth) and their creative power is being tapped by major corporations, at what point should they start receiving a share of revenue for their work? We have all seen major media companies telling us that file-sharing is bad because it takes other people’s intellectual property without just compensation. So, why are these same companies now taking their audience’s intellectual property for free? Do we understand their profits primarily as a tax to support the infrastructure that enables their distribution?”

I believe copyrights laws should be revisited to pave way for individuals and some grassroots entrepreneurs to also benefit from their creativity or intellectual ideas sold to big companies over the web.

Final Project – Sports Daily

Victor Martinez

Professor Bruckercohen

Intro to Media and Digital Culture

5/5/16

Sports Daily Newspaper

Sports have taken a significant portion of the general public’s way of life. Some people participate in sports directly either as their career, part time job or leisure. Many other participate in them either directly or indirectly for many different reasons. For whatever reason, these people always need a reliable platform where they get information exhaustively about their fields of sports especially their teams (Andersson and Mattsson 85-106). With the printed version of the Sports Daily, daily news about the trending issues in sports is updated. However, with printed version, it may be difficult to reach a potentially large population around the world. Consequently, if it were possible to reach a large number of people, it would be extremely expensive. Digitalizing the Sports Daily Newspaper is the absolute next big thing. It will solve many problems associated with using printed version of Sports Daily while opening up many great opportunities and prospects for reaching the large global markets.

Sports Daily Newspapers intends to bring a new revolution in the industry. It will capture all sporting activities ranging from football to athletes and even skiing. No stone will be left unrolled. It will detail not only what is going on in the world but it will also detail the lifestyles of all famous sportsmen, their life activities, and their families. It will bring in a new sensation in the sports world revolutionizing everything. For quite a long time, some sports like skiing, skating, racing and even skydiving have been sidelined by many sports newspapers but Sports Daily will ensure that all are incorporated as long as they qualify to be termed as sporting activities. The digitalized version will be highly customized into a user-friendly interface and it will ensure that the sports news is updated as soon as the feed is received while the print version will be updated on a daily basis.

Digital media opens up a large market for the Sports Daily Newspaper since the internet is open for the world to view. People from the far distance across the world can be able to access the Sports Daily page just by a few clicks on their computers and phones. Content that can be posted on the page is unlimited, unlike the printed versions. News on sports can be posted not only in writing and pictures but in a form of animations, audio and video. The best thing about the digitalized Sports Daily is that information that was posted a long time ago could be easily retrieved, unlike the printed version. To retrieve from the printed version, one has to keep records of a list of daily newspapers. Even with the whole list of records, it would still be difficult to retrieve a specific kind of information from a whole bunch of newspapers in the archives, not to mention how difficult it would be for all people to do this kind of process. Digital media has many aspects of technology that enables people to search for very specific information on specific subjects online.

The basic idea of this whole project is to bring the printed version of the Sports Daily Newspaper digitalized. The content and context of the Sports Daily Newspaper online will be the same as the printed version. However, the digitalized version is an advancement of the printed one. More sports news especially the trending ones will be posted and available for use by the whole sports audience around the world. Since the page would be online, more products and services that are associated with online pages will be offered.

A web page created for the online newspaper would serve as a platform to post sports news and other products and services, and the audience to view the posted information for their use. As usual, some of the news posted on the web page is related to some previous news or information posted on the website by the company. Using the available technology, some words can be hyperlinked to the pages of the previous or related news. With the website expected to form a large audience or consumers, other products and services to other website pages can be offered in terms of advertisement, just like the printed version of the newspaper.

Sports Daily Newspaper will major on posting sports news and other news that directly affects the sports world. Additionally, analysis of sports events including the predictions will be available. The news and information provided by the web page shall be general in terms of the audience, able to be used by all sports audience. However, the website shall provide very detailed information in terms of content. Sports include men and women football, rugby, tennis, volleyball, basketball, baseball, cricket, skate and snowboarding, cycling, boxing, gymnastics, athletics, swimming, and diving, among others. In many countries, the searching trends of many people are often about sports or sports-related activities. With this wide range of sports as products, the web page is expected to draw a huge fan base or audience. The majority of the population who use sports news or information are usually people below the age of 35. The majority of this age-grouped population is usually familiar with the use of computers and the internet.

With every passing minute, famous sports events take place across the world. The web page products including the live streaming of scores and live streaming commentaries of the major sports events in the world will be provided. Analysis of matches, teams, and players involved in the major events on sports with huge following around the  world will be provided, few days before the begin of the events. News on the comments and reactions by major players in the events like coaches, players and famous pundits on relevant events shall be presented.

The main audiences for the Sports Daily Newspaper online are the supporters and followers of the sports events covered by the newspaper. Our new world of sports will, to a large extent associated with betting practices among the supporters and on betting sites. Sports news and analysis are usually in high demand because of the ever increasing number of people gambling on major sports events. With the potentially large number of users of Sports Daily Newspaper, a proportionally large number of companies featuring sports-related products shall be targeted especially for advertisements. For example, companies featuring on selling sports merchandise like sports shirts, shoes, among others. Such companies include Nike Company, Adidas Company, among others. Betting Companies have grown in numbers and some have become larger. With high competition for gamblers in the world, the companies always target sports – web page for advertisements.

With many already established sports web pages on the internet, it is expected that it would be difficult to establish our brand and online web page in the online market. However, with the following strategies in place, the consumers or online users of online sports products and services shall be glued to our page. First, the already established audience for the printed sports Daily Newspaper shall be targeted. It will be easy for the users to learn about the digitalized version of the newspaper through the printed ones. More advertisements through other digital Medias would effectively amass larger audience to our site.

The revenue will mainly come from advertisers seeking to market their commodities. With increased numbers of viewers and readers over time, the newspaper will be able to pick very fast within a short time thus attracting many agents who would wish to have their advertisements on the newspaper. Since the newspaper will have less competition since many sports newspaper major in very few sports events while we shall be majoring in many sports events, it shall, therefore, attract more avid readers. This will in turn result into high demand for ad space in both the online and print version. In this way, the newspaper will bring in more revenue (Willis). This revenue can then be used to pay workers like chief editors and people to collect and compile the news together with other experts who will be in charge of automation of publication and more so ensure that the online version feed is always up to date. The money earned will be enough to meet the production cost of the print version. The online version will only be costly when designing it but afterwards, it will be cheap since it will only require maintenance cost and nothing else.

The newspaper prosperity and future advancement will be determined by the number of readers during the first six months. I am very optimistic that due to the content that will be published the newspaper will have a brighter future of advancement. Given that there are many sportsmen and sports fans, there digitalized newspaper will succeed (Willis). In some countries, sports events are the top searched on the internet so more revenue is likely to be collected from the online version.

Mashups

Rayshawn Parrilla

Mashups has evolved into a popular evolution of software and the web. It’s a web application which combines content from multiple sources to create one interface. The characteristics consist of data, music, video and text. Mashups development approach is to create an easier and smoother interface for its users. Though its interface is likely to provide an exciting web experience, its contribution can pose a threat to our culture.

The idea of new bread technology allows web designers, thinkers and artist the opportunity to take obsolete creations and transform them into new ones. There are various forms of mashups including mapping, video, shopping and music mashups. Mashups consist of providing a third party data; its development can be illegal and pose a threat to the copy right laws. Music mashups is an example of this theory. In the article “Grey Album Producer Danger Mouse Explains how he did it,” discusses the fundamentals and development of music mashups. Brian Burton is a producer who blend the cappella version “The Black Album” by Jay-z with the Beatles LP “The White Album” and created “The Grey Album.” Through his creativity and skills, his album was a download success. Burton stirred up huge controversial and posed a threat to copy right laws. Without seeking permission from the artist or label to sample their music, this concept is illegal. Whether its audio, skits or even ideas sampled, it is considered illegal and violates copy right laws. The rules of Sampling are clear. The copy right holder is in charge and they come up with prices for their samples. In today’s modern time, we live in a file sharing world. New technology is providing an easier platform for people to sample music and recordings especially when artists like Jay-z are releasing cappella versions to his albums.

Mashups

A Mashup is when you combine two different media to create something new or different. Most Mashups are unique, take skill and take creativity. Mashups are posing a threat to copyright laws online because it is taking two different media, that were not intended to be together and using them without permission. Mashups are both, beneficial and detrimental to new media culture because it is fun for fans and can be useful; however, not always profitable or profitable enough to be sold as it is own a separate product.

The article “1+1+1+1 The New Math of Mashups,” by Sasha FrereJones, is about the use of mashup in music by well renowned mashup artists. An example of a popular mashup song is DJ Reset’s “Frontin on Debra.” Frontin on Debra is mixed with Pharrell Williams song “Frontin” and Beck’s song “Debra.” Both songs are in different genre of music; however, DJ Reset used the acapella vocals of becky and the instrumental of Frontin. In the business of music mashups are not always popular because it brings the profit margin lower. Any song that uses multiple samples “a mashup with that song means the label issuing the mashup has to convince all the publishers involved to take a reduction in royalty.”

The article “Grey Album Producer Danger Mouse Explains How He Did It,” by Corey Moss, is about how Danger Moss created the Grey Album. The Gray album is a mashup of Jayz’s Black Album and The Beatles’s White Album. To create the Gray Album, Moss measured the number of beats per minute in each song and sampled the instrumentals from the white albums. It took Moss a duration of two weeks, using a computer program called Acid Pro, to complete The Gray album.

The article “InfoEnclosure 2.0,” by Dmytri Kleiner & Brian Wyrick, is about the usage of Web 2.0. Web 2.0 is meant for the people that want to be the publisher and the user. “Instead of the traditional model of a content provider publishing their own content and the end user consuming it, the new model allows the company’s site to act as the centralised portal between the users who are both creators and consumers.” Web 2.0 is a mashup of professionals and amateurs.
