Cable companies for decades have control practically everything viewers watched. The cable bills were and still is abnormally high and to top it off the average cable channels does not offer much of a watching variety. If the subscribers desire more program access they are required to pay extra for channels such as HBO, SHOWTIME and etc. Extras like the Movie Channels and Pay-Per-View, cost is higher than the actual monthly cable bill. On average a cable bill could run viewers anywhere from $120.00 and up monthly. Cable companies once controlled so much of what viewers watched. Agreeing to overpriced cable contract was the only way consumers could gain full access to their favorite programs. Thankfully times have changed drastically for the better, companies such as Netflix, Amazon TV, and Hulu has definitely change the game by not only added a few extra dollars back into the views pockets, but as provide on demand access. The on demand access to unlimited programs is what people are more concerned about these days. Digital television alongside advance technology is giving viewers more access for less money. Today App’s are the new way of watching television and connecting people who enjoy the same programs. The ability to connect people with like interest all over the world is the new wave of digital technology. People can now tune into program and gain unlimited access in real time, something that was virtually impossible a few years ago. With all of the benefits of Apps it is no wonder that people are now opting out of the pricey binding contracts with traditional cable companies and moving forward.
In the article “The Future Of TV Isn’t Apps. We Need Our Channels In One Place” the author addressed how consumers want the “Three W’s” whatever, wherever, and whenever. Many households have access to multiple devices to watch different programs at their leisure. Unlike the traditional method of watching television, the whole family sat in the Livingroom and everyone agreed on one program to watched. I disagree with the notion that viewers will become frustrated with the different steps needed to access these program Apps. Multiple steps to access your favorite programs is a small price to pay, for someone who is saving hundreds of dollars each year due to Netflix, Hulu etc . In my perception the payoff is much better, People are saving more money and gaining on demand service to watch their favorite program at their own time.
