Is everyone online?

According to the article “Great Wall of Facebook”” more than 200 million people about, one- fifth of all Internet users have a Facebook account” These number says much about the popularity of Facebook. The amount of online users that have Facebook accounts is continually growing. Facebook users disclose more information than any other site, including google. Facebook is a baby company compare to Google, however Google has made it known that that would like to partnership with Facebook. Many of Googles former employee have left the long standing company to join forces with Mark Zuckerberg to help establish Facebook in the world of social media.

In the article “The Web Means the End to Forgetting” Jeffrey Rosen spoke of a 25-year-old teacher in training and how she was denied her teaching degree because of an image she posted online with a cup of alcohol in her hands. I was in fact familiar with the story, but not so much the details. When people post pictures, quotes, rants and videos online their no longer the owner of this footage, it become public property. That is a very scary reality that many people such as myself often forget. Companies and other government officials, however never forgets this. “According to recent surveys 75 percent of U.S recruiters and Human Resource department do online reach about their candidates.” The fact that they can use this information to judge or discriminate against someone is quite alarming. Moreover, the data is never lost and can resurface at any given time. Like Jeffery Rosen stated there is no second chance with digital media and social media in place. With the advancement of social media people are no longer able to make childish mistake and eventually learn from their ways. I could not imagine being young and naive in this era where all my mistakes are documented and eventually used against me. Before social media people made mistakes and most of the time it went unnoticed, unfortunately not anymore and we( the people) have ourselves to thank. “Has scholars propose creating new legal rights to force web sites to remove false and slanderous statements.” Great strides are being made, however this is still not enough. People need to become more aware of their online posting and not so eager to share personal moments with complete strangers on the World Wide Web.

  1. I believe the younger social media generation will eventually grow into adults and all employers and schools will sympathize with young people sharing inappropriate content online because everyone would be desensitized to this behavior.
