Film and TV

In the article the Future isn’t TV, it’s apps. We need all the channels in one place the writer is trying to get across that the TV world needs to evolve with the times. With all these different streaming options the ratings for TV have gone down. People don’t need to watch TV when they have access to Netflix and Hulu that lets them watch their favorite TV shows on the go. He describes that just because a person watches TV or that a company has a studio that it doesn’t make them experts. That in developing TV for a device like the PlayStation or the Xbox it’s still just another device that users have to interact with.  In the second article The Future of TV Is Here. Can Cable Survive? The writer goes on the history TV and how to survive the time that Cable TV has to change. I agree that TV has to change with the times even now Hulu, Netflix, and even Youtube are developing original content that is taking more and more viewers away from Cable TV. At the beginning of February, the BBC pulled Doctor WHO from Netflix and Hulu, not just the newer episodes, the older ones as well.  The articles that I have read about this say that the contract ran out, but I know that everyone who has Hulu waits until the next day to watch the episode, or if they have Netflix people will wait for the entire season to come out and never watch it on cable. I’ve mentioned this in class youtube has now gotten a bigger demographic because the content the company puts on there, and studio companies are becoming petty and striking channels for no reason. The channels get penalized for this; their monetization gets taken away as well as other features they have, it even goes as far as their channels taken down. There is a movement with YouTubers called where is the fair use which has all channels shining a light on this problem. I feel that if studios can work together that the future of TV could be saved.

Film and Digital TV

First article, “The Future of TV Isn’t Apps. We Need All Our Channels in One Place” speaks on how television viewers want their favorite TV shows and series all in one place. I will definitely have to agree with Gary Myer because having all these different new shows to watch on all these different networks can be annoying. Especially the automatic charge that comes month after month. Myer mentions an irresistible idea which is to watch whatever content we want anywhere we want and whenever we want. Although, it may sound amazing, it may not be as easy as it sounds, it will definitely take some work and money for cable providers to actually complete the idea. They will have to make some connections with the services that stream our favorite shows and movies to actually make this happen. But I wouldn’t underestimate the idea and actually believe this can happen in the future.

Second article, “The Future Of TV Is Here. Can Cable Survive?” speaks on some of the streaming services that are independent and make money from subscribers without having to pay any fees to another party. However, HBO has to pay fees to the cable providers because HBO is partnered with cable. HBO Go however, the streaming service a fairly upcoming service gives you the opportunity to subscribe to a membership without having cable. I believe that is pretty scary for the cable providers because the bigger HBO Go gets, they might decide to part ways with cable.

I believe digital distribution is definitely ruining the film and television culture, because these streaming services are taking over the cable provider’s jobs. I feel as if people barely tune it to watch tv unless it’s for sports games and maybe news if that! Technology as a hole is taking over the world, soon we will have personal walking robots as assistants.

Is Television Going Extinct?

After reading these two articles, I’m neutral of the idea of television going away. Even with Apple TV, I still do not believe that television will go extinct. Due to the fact that apps have internal errors themselves, Television and Cable can survive but it won’t survive long. I also believe that 3-dimensional movies are not really creating 2-dimensional films because it depends on the genre that the movie is about. 3-D effects have in fact taken over the movie scene especially with the trailers, logo animations and animated text.

The first article The Future of TV Isn’t Apps. We Need All Our Channels in One Place” by Gary Myer speaks about how television should not be cancelled and should just be stored into one place. Apps are gradually taking over the planet and the only thing really keeping television alive is sports and news. Music videos are now produced online and cable TV just has a lot of repeats of certain TV episodes. Myer also mentioned about the 3 W’s of any viewer. What they want, when they want, wherever they want. Casual viewers do not like to go the extra mile and take extra steps. They also do not like to pay additional fees to watch certain programming. Casual viewers just want something that takes a maximum of 3 steps, one place or site to pay their fees and all the up-to-date content that they are paying their hard earned money for.

The second article The Future Of TV Is Here. Can Cable Survive? the new face of television programming. The author talks about how Netflix is the new holy grail to watch new and an archive of TV shows. it also talks about Hulu Plus which I don’t like very much. Lastly, HBO Go which is a new source to watch movies and TV shows produced by HBO without having to pay for a cable subscription. I did not really read this second as much as I did the first one because I believe Cable TV will stick around. The prime word of TV is ‘TELE”vision because is visual that is being told to the viewer. Now to renovate television to app-based programming just defeats the purpose of television in general.

The Future of TV

Cable companies for decades have control practically everything viewers watched. The cable bills were and still is abnormally high and to top it off the average cable channels does not offer much of a watching variety. If the subscribers desire more program access they are required to pay extra for channels such as HBO, SHOWTIME and etc. Extras like the Movie Channels and Pay-Per-View, cost is higher than the actual monthly cable bill. On average a cable bill could run viewers anywhere from $120.00 and up monthly. Cable companies once controlled so much of what viewers watched. Agreeing to overpriced cable contract was the only way consumers could gain full access to their favorite programs. Thankfully times have changed drastically for the better, companies such as Netflix, Amazon TV, and Hulu has definitely change the game by not only added a few extra dollars back into the views pockets, but as provide on demand access. The on demand access to unlimited programs is what people are more concerned about these days. Digital television alongside advance technology is giving viewers more access for less money. Today App’s are the new way of watching television and connecting people who enjoy the same programs. The ability to connect people with like interest all over the world is the new wave of digital technology. People can now tune into program and gain unlimited access in real time, something that was virtually impossible a few years ago. With all of the benefits of Apps it is no wonder that people are now opting out of the pricey binding contracts with traditional cable companies and moving forward.

In the article “The Future Of TV Isn’t Apps. We Need Our Channels In One Place” the author addressed how consumers want the “Three W’s” whatever, wherever, and whenever. Many households have access to multiple devices to watch different programs at their leisure. Unlike the traditional method of watching television, the whole family sat in the Livingroom and everyone agreed on one program to watched. I disagree with the notion that viewers will become frustrated with the different steps needed to access these program Apps. Multiple steps to access your favorite programs is a small price to pay, for someone who is saving hundreds of dollars each year due to Netflix, Hulu etc . In my perception the payoff is much better, People are saving more money and gaining on demand service to watch their favorite program at their own time.

Film and Television

The film and television industry has changed platforms of distribution over the years the way video is shared distributed and purchased has evolved with advancements in technology. With streaming technology changing and improving rapidly, this has allowed for more access to film and television, like many other forms of media distribution services, and media streaming services.

Television and Film streaming is faster and more efficient than conventional television and film. I have noticed as of late the bigger the film budget the larger the box office sales opening week. There are a handful of films and television shows that make their premiere every week, and weekend. I do not think films have failed I believe there is an over saturation of film. There is also a need for better writers and more diversity on screen.

As of late there has been a revolution and war of streaming services that is fueled by profit. Film and television streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime are available apps for computers and mobile devices. Paid streaming options are advertisement free for subscribers. The platforms for distribution will continue to evolve in the film and television industry and all media platforms as we have seen throughout the years.

Film & Digital Television

“The Future of TV Isn’t Apps. We Need All Our Channels in One Place” by Gary Miller was dead on! I personally use the Apple TV to watch Netflix and my amazon fire stick that is jailbroken to watch movies and television shows unless I want to use the xfinity app that my cousin allows me to use with his password so that I know I am getting the best quality possible. With the xfinity app sometimes I have to restart my macbook so that I can use airplay, and if I forget and pause the show for too long, yep you guessed it! The screen goes blank and it takes a while to come back on. Once I started reading this article I felt like the author was describing my struggle because some nights I don’t feel like loading up the fire stick or going to input 3 just so I can watch a movie or a show. It get’s tedious and in this generation we like the easiest way possible so it would be nice to be able to watch everything you want to watch on 1 application. Convenience plays a MAJOR role. All this juggling through different apps gets a little overwhelming sometimes. Last week I saw 5 minutes of Fast & Furious 6 and said to myself “I want to watch this from the beginning but on HBO GO” (I also get that free from my cousin) I didn’t want to watch it on “Kodi” because I didn’t feel like going through the waiting process or not finding the best quality but when I checked HBO GO and Netflix they didn’t have it. If there was 1 app I could have watched the movie without all the hassle.

“The Future of Cable TV is Here, Can Cable Survive” by Greg Satell

I feel subscription’s are the way to go. The only reason I keep my cable is because of Football and Sports Center….if there is a way that I can watch “PTI” on “ESPNGO” along with all the sports games I want in HD quality I would be more inclined to get rid of cable. Everybody always says that they ways to watch sports in great quality but as of now I have only seen NBA TV in a clear picture. I think cable is declining due to the high prices and the availability of subscriptions, I just think for me keeping cable is like a security blanket. It’s a struggle during football season for me to find someone with NFL network and barter with them to let me get the subscription on my device and I pay the difference. Hopefully in class tomorrow I find a better way!

Film and Digital Television

“The future of TV Isn’t Apps. We Need All Our Channels in one Place” is the caption Gary Myer gave to his article. When I read this article, it sounded to me Gary Myer seems getting worried and complaining about how completely TV has changed. According Gary, “Since the launch of Apple TV in 2006, companies have introduced a string of over-the –top (OTT) streaming internet video devices such as Roku, Chromecast, PlayStation, Xbox, etc.” he further talked about Amazon Fire TV “breathlessly reviewed as the potential holy grail of set-top boxes” and considered it being very wrong.

I stand to be corrected, I think the world is changing day in and out. People are tired of being exposed to one particular digital medium. Gone are the days where cables or traditional channels were the order of the day. Almost every home had cable. I think the new digital media has revamp the entertainment not forgetting the swift nature of how information is also being shared over the internet. I understand this new technique have been affecting other areas but in all, it has also given consumers the power to choose whatever they like and what they do not like. We are in a world of competition. Thomas Friedman once said, “The world is flat”. This has given a fair opportunity for competition. This is the issue of “survival of the fitters”.

The Second reading captioned “The Future of TV Is Here. Can Cable Survive?” by Greg Satell also outlined the economic aspect of our world today. As mentioned earlier, competition results cost effective. A lot of people today are running from the traditional television systems like cable to App TV’s all because it is less expensive. A lot of people are now conscious about how they spend. This has also given a lot of an advantages to television app companies over the others. There are less expensive TV apps that don’t just allow consumers select their favorites but also gets the cheapest monthly bills as compared to cable.

Film and Digital Television

Digital distribution and production effected film and television culture by giving consumers affordable prescriptions based memberships and exclusive content. Online prescriptions give consumers the conveniences of watching there favorite shows at anytime; uninterrupted. Cable follows the same format; people schedules are different and often have to work longer hours. Exclusive content keeps consumers consistent, familiar and brings new consumers. Having good exclusive content can create word of mouth promotions. Digital media being more affordable takes the control that the cable companies have over consumers. Cable Companies have contracts with various private contractors to only allow their company to operate in certain areas. The result is high prices, poor services and no competition.

Streaming movies is more convenient. I don’t believe movies are failing because watching movies on your tablet, laptop and phone is beneficial. “Since the launch of Apple TV in 2006, companies have introduced a string of over-the-top (OTT) streaming Internet video devices such as Roku, Chromecast, PlayStation, Xbox, etc.” while riding the training, I often see people watching movies on their tablet while riding the train. Some people don’t want to go to the movies theaters because its overpriced and crowded. I remember when Straight out of Compton premiered in the movies theaters and I did not want to go because the news reported extra police would be site. I first learned about streaming movies was when I was working an overnight job. At the job I would bring my laptop and watch movies to keep me awoke. I would watch new and old movies on Roklulu.com.

I enjoy 3D effects, if used in the right way they can be impactful. One of my little cousin’s favorite movies is Toy Story in 3D. I plan to go to the screening of the new Superman vs. Batman movie that will be in 3D.

Film and Digital Television

First reading “The Future of TV Isn’t Apps. We Need All Our Channels in One Place” I can agree with somewhat of the authors complaints, as in new media becoming the holy grail of TV/entertainment. Maybe not at the moment but new media is making a big impact on the way TV is delivered and how is that? “When we speak of the true ‘holy grail’ of content and entertainment, consumers want the ‘Three W’s’: whatever content they want, whenever they want it, wherever they want it (Gary Myer).” Viewers do not care whether they get TV content over Wi-Fi, television through their tablet of whatever, the age of having one dominant TV and everyone having to take turns watching what they want has changed. Now if cable can enter new media involving apps and providing just as much channels as they provide on traditional television, that would make cable dominant. With new media like Amazon fire, Netflix, Roku, even YouTube there are some flaws, like only giving content for there personal catalog, and even YouTube voice recognition, and also you have to wait for new content, we kind’ve lose the freedom of browsing through many channels. I personally still like using cable, I’m a little old school so I have balance of using both traditional way of entertainment and using digital outlets.

Second reading “The Future of TV Is Here. Can Cable Survive?”  The advantages of future television is not only people can watch there favorite shows anytime they want, but this new business has also become less cost effective, viewers that subscribe the apps like Netflix, Amazon Fire, Hulu, and Roku are saving about 600 or more dollars then having traditional cable. Not only viewers but new business can effectively gain competitive advantage over traditional cable companies because they are cutting the medium/ third party out, so companies like Netflix that are only charging $8 a month compared cable $100 bills are still competing financially because they are not in depth to any third party.

Music Industry Changing

Jacob Kastrenakes’s story caption “Apple Music may not steal you from Spotify, but it can still win the streaming battle” in my opinion is the reality in our world today. I personally admire the business strategies and competition in our world of commerce today. There are several promotions companies like apple for example use to attracts customers to its products. As the article made mention of, they give you few months to try a product for free which attracts almost every person to such product. There are also similar products or services like Pandora which equally works like Spotify and sometimes even better than apple streaming as far as the applications are concern.

The world has changed so drastically to embracing new technologies and services like streaming music for example. Not too long ago, music was made on compact disc (CDs). Now its rapidly fading out for new revolution (streaming). I think one of the reasons apple in particular, killed music on compact disc (CDs) business was its intention dominating the music market with its streaming services.

Brian Chen also in his article captioned, “Apple to Pay $3 Billion to Buy Beats” are evident enough how this streaming music are getting more roots in our world of music. I personally use Beat. I have two (2) different types; the beat studio, this type of beat cancels noise and I use this when Music  on the train or bus and the solo when I am home relaxing. I think apple in its unique style of doing business, wants to overcome the music industry with superb business techniques and quality. To pay such huge sums of money to Beats, in my opinion, apple really mean business. I think such great business deals in the music and digital industries will strengthens apple’s monopolistic sense of business.
